Volunteer Opportunities

We have several volunteer opportunities that enable alumni to stay connected with the program through networking events, speaking with current students, and demonstrating service to the profession.

Get Involved as an Alumni & Friend

Annual Alumni/Student Reception at APTA’s CSM

Every year, the GW Program encourages current students, faculty, and alumni to gather for the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) Combined Sections Meeting (CSM). CSM is a collaborative effort between APTA and the 18 specialty sections, enabling thousands of physical therapists from around the nation to convene for several days to enjoy exceptional programming, networking opportunities, and an exhibit hall filled with products and services. We hope to see you at our annual student/alumni reception.

GW PT ProBono Clinic

The Little Workers of the Sacred Heart Clinic is a local volunteer based clinic in Northeast Washington DC. The clinic was founded by Sister Dierdra Burns and past graduates of the GW PT program. The clinic provides physical therapy as well as other referral services to underserved and immigrant populations in the DC metro area. Current GW PT students volunteer at the clinic on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. throughout the year. The clinic is also open on Wednesdays and always welcoming to therapists from the area who graciously donate their time and services to help this population. There is no minimum commitment whatsoever and even if you are only available one day a year, your service would be greatly appreciated. Sign up today!

Connect with a Recent Graduate or Student

The transition from school to the working world is both exhilarating and at times a challenge.  It is our hope that alumni can serve as a “mentor” for a student or alumni who either is moving to your city or pursuing a career in your specialty. As a mentor, providing guidance about a new geographic area, housing opportunities, or professional advice is invaluable and always appreciated. Sign up today!

Serve as a Class Ambassador

We live in a mobile world. However, this certainly means there are multiple communication tools alumni can use to keep in touch. You are the program’s best connection to your peers!   Volunteer to be the point of contact for your class and help your classmates stay in touch with the GW PT Alumni events and opportunities. Sign up today!

PT Alumni Advisory Council

The mission of the GW PT Alumni Advisory Council is to enrich and bolster alumni engagement and to foster a lifelong connection with alma mater and the GW PT community.

Why Get Involved with GW PT?

Alumni sitting at a table with a sewing machine

One thing I love about GW is the amount of opportunities to get involved. This year (during PT Day of Service), I was introduced to a wonderful organization, Days for Girls, which helps construct feminine hygiene kits for young women around the world. While sewing, I caught up with professors, heard about the clinical rotations of 3rd year students, and met some first and second year students. I love the sense of community that GW fosters, from the micro-community of the PT program at 2000 Penn, to the city of D.C. Through these experiences, we can find our place in the larger community of the world."
