Prerequisite Coursework
The following courses must be academic, college-level coursework completed at a regionally accredited institution and earned with a C or better (C- grades and lower do not apply)
- Anatomy and Physiology (6-8 semester credits or quarter equivalent, lab recommended but not required, human focus preferred, general or college-level). Any of the following courses will be accepted:
- 2-part course sequence (combined Anatomy & Physiology I and II) OR
- 1 distinct course in Anatomy along with 1 distinct course in Physiology
- *Biology (6-8 semester credits or quarter equivalent, lab recommended but not required, general or college-level). Any of the following courses will be accepted:
- Applicants whose institution is on a quarter system must take a 3-part course sequence or 3 distinct courses
- Exercise Physiology course can be used to fulfill only 1 of the Biology prerequisite
- *Chemistry (8 semester credits or quarter equivalent, lab required, general or college-level). Any of the following courses will be accepted:
- Applicants whose institution is on a quarter system must take a 3-part course sequence or 3 distinct courses (we will accept both courses where the lab and lecture is combined and courses where the lab is separate from the lecture)
- Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, or Biochemistry
- *Physics (8 semester credits or quarter equivalent, lab required, general or college-level). Any of the following courses will be accepted:
- Applicants whose institution is on a quarter system must take a 3-part course sequence or 3 distinct courses (we will accept both courses where the lab and lecture is combined and courses where the lab is separate from the lecture)
- Calculus-based Physics acceptable, but not required
- Writing Intensive or English/Literature (3 semester credits or 1 course for institutions on a quarter system, general or college-level)). Any of the following courses will be accepted:
- English Composition
- English Dept. course
- Literature
- Technical Writing
- Writing-intensive Communications course
- Courses designated as “Writing intensive” or "Writing within the discipline” even if taken outside of an English Dept. (please upload a course description or syllabus for a "Writing intensive" course in the "Catalog Course Descriptions" section of your PTCAS application for review)
- Psychology (6 semester credits or quarter equivalent, general or college-level). Any of the following courses will be accepted:
- Introduction to Psychology
- Psychology courses taken within or outside of a Psychology department (Human Growth and Development)
- Statistics (3 semester credits or 1 course for institutions on a quarter system, general or college-level). Any of the following courses will be accepted:
- Statistics course taken within or outside of a Mathematics department
- Research/methodology course that incorporates Statistic
*All science courses must be for science/health science majors.
Online/distance learning courses and labs
In keeping with our admissions requirements during past admissions cycles, prerequisite courses (including labs) taken online at any regionally accredited institution are acceptable. Therefore, online and distance learning courses and labs will be accepted in fulfillment of prerequisite coursework completed during any admissions cycle, including during the 2022-23 PTCAS admissions cycle.
Pass/fail coursework
Given the disruption experienced due to COVID-19, we recognize some students have choose and/or were required to take courses Pass/Fail or Credit/No-Credit from spring 2020 through fall 2021. Therefore GW DPT will accept coursework from spring 2020 through fall 2021 Pass/Fail or Credit/No-Credit for prerequisites.
